Shillong, June 18: Multiple landslides along National Highway 6 have brought traffic to a standstill and efforts are on clear the highway.
East Jaintia Hills Deputy commissioner, Abhilash Baranwal said, due to incessant rain for the past couple of days there have been several landslides and road blocks.
The incessant downpour has caused significant disruptions, making the clearing efforts by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) personnel challenging.
“Movement of traffic has been stopped and work to clear the road is being done by the personnel of the National Highway Authority of India,” Barnawal said adding that due to the incessant downpour, the clearing work is challenging, but nonetheless, all efforts are being put in to clear the report for vehicular movement as soon as possible.
This stretch of highway connects Meghalaya with the Barak Valley of Assam and extends to Mizoram and other northeastern states.
It is one of the vital road links for the people of Barak Valley, and hundreds of trucks ply on it, transporting essentials to different parts of the northeast.
The Meghalaya Police have advised commuters, including heavy motor vehicles (HMVs), to seek alternative routes until further notice.
Meanwhile, all efforts are underway to clear the road for vehicular movement.
