Guwahati, May 9: All eyes are set on the BJP legislature party meeting today when the next chief minister of Assam is expected to be announced.

The newly-elected MLAs of the party are scheduled to meet at the party's legislature room in the State Assembly premises. Incumbent Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sharma, the two who are in the race for the top position, had returned late last night from New Delhi, along with central leaders of the party.

The duo had spent yesterday at the national capital in a series of meetings with the central leadership to resolve the chief minister issue, but the final decision was later pushed to the legislature party meeting here today. Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar and party's national general secretary Arun Singh have been named central observers to oversee the election of the new legislature party leader.

The BJP-led alliance had retained power in the State for the second consecutive term in the election results that were declared one week back, but the new chief minister is yet to be named, delaying formation of the new government. The alliance, with Asom Gana Parishad and United People's Party Liberal being the other partners, had won 75 seats in the 126-member Assembly.
