Guwahati, Jan 15: Arani S Hazarika, a class 12 final year student of Holy Child School, Guwahati has brought laurels to the state by securing a place to study an undergraduate course at the University of Oxford, England.

The 17-year-old school girl has shown exceptional merit during the long strenuous online interviews conducted by this educational giant, which is considered to be one of the most prestigious universities of the world.

It needs to be mentioned here that she will be pursuing her course from the Balliol College of the University. The college has made an open conditional offer to Arani guaranteeing a seat in the college.

Arani will get the opportunity to study Sanskrit (including Hinduism) in the University's three year bachelor's degree course starting this October. It is worth noting that while students from Assam have previously gone on to study at MPhil and DPhil levels, getting such an opportunity to study at the undergraduate level is a rare feat.

She is the daughter of author-journalist, Partha Pratim Hazarika, Assistant Editor of The Assam Tribune, and Sudakshina Bhuyan, popular Feng Shui-Vaastu consultant and textile entrepreneur. Arani is a resident of Ananda Nagar located in Bamunimaidam.

Speaking to media, Arani informed that she has faced several internationally acclaimed linguists, orientalists and scholars of Buddhism, Christianity and Sanskrit during the gruelling sessions of interviews. During the last four months of this admission process till the final results, that were declared on January 11th, Arani had successfully completed several challenging tasks given by the University.

The famous Balliol College established in 1263, is one of the constituent colleges of one of the world's most ancient educational institutions. Every year, around 25000 students from across the world apply to the different undergraduate courses of the University, and only around 4000 students, on the basis of merit, are offered admissions.
