Manipur shuts schools, colleges and universities amid floods and landslides
Rising river levels inundated villages and farmlands, with relief efforts underway and a search operation launched for the missing

Imphal, Sept 17: The Manipur Government has announced closure of all government, government-aided and private schools, colleges and universities in the State, on Wednesday “in view of the prevailing weather conditions resulting in incidences of flood and landslides across various districts.”
Director of Education (Schools) Ng Bhogendra Meitei issued an order in this regard on Tuesday. The Director of University and Higher Education, in an order on Tuesday, said: “It is hereby notified for information of all concerned that due to incessant rain in the past few days and subsequent flooding in different parts of the State, all colleges in valley districts viz., Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Kakching and Thoubal shall remain closed on 17th September, 2025.”
All schools, colleges, and universities in the State also remained closed today following government orders in view of the prevailing situation in the aftermath of the flood and landslides.
The educational institutions have been closed in the State following worsening of the breaching of the Iril river bank and overflowing of Imphal, Thoubal and Nongdambi rivers, affecting many villages and agricultural lands in the valley districts of Imphal East, Imphal West, and Thoubal.
Thoubal DC Hannah Kahmei and an official team inspected the flood-affected area and distributed relief materials on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, a search operation is on to locate a 70-year-old man after he fell into the Iril river on Monday afternoon. The man is a resident of Kshetri Awang Leikai in Imphal East district, which was affected after breaching of the river bank of Iril, a major river of the State.
