Two killed, four critically injured in hit & run accident in Jorhat, driver arrested

Two persons were killed and four others critically injured after a Scorpio SUV ran over pedestrians in Jhanji Hahsara Dihingiagaon under Teok Police Station

Jorhat, Jan 16: Two persons died and four others were critically injured in a road accident in the wee hours of Wednesday at Jhanji Hahsara Dihingiagaon under Bamunpukhuri Police Outpost of Teok Police Station in Jorhat district.

According to sources, an SUV (Scorpio) reportedly ran over six people on the roadside and sped away. The deceased were identified as Abhijit Phukan and Amrit Gogoi, while the four injured are Pranjit Gogoi, Manas Gogoi, Sujit Gogoi, and Pankaj Dutta. Those with serious injuries are undergoing treatment at the Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH). Pankaj Dutta was later referred to Assam Medical College and Hospital, Dibrugarh, for advanced treatment.

Later, in the day police arrested Mintu Gogoi, who reportedly was driving the vehicle, which was seized. Investigation was on in the case.

Meanwhile, the incident had sparked widespread anger among the residents of Dihingiagaon, who were demanding stringent punishment for Mintu Gogoi.
